Organized, Not Perfect!
With more-perfect-than-life pictures everywhere you turn on social media, it’s easy to believe most people live like those photos. Even if most people do, it’s not practical or necessary for a happy life or an organized home. Above all, it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of your home but you and those living with you. If your kitchen isn’t social media-worthy, but you like it and can easily find what you want, then hooray for you!
I have a thing with labels. I tend to label everything! Maybe it goes back to that hot summer evening in my credential program when the professor told us, “The sign of a great teacher is a classroom that runs itself.” Words that served me well! And I believe the same idea applies to the home. A well-organized home runs itself. And I firmly believe labels play a huge role in keeping your home (or a classroom) well organized.
People spend days every year looking for lost stuff, from their keys to their sunglasses to their tax returns. In the kitchen, you may need to transfer some ingredients to a new container to keep it fresh. Without a label, how will you know what’s in that container? Sugar and salt look oh-so-much-alike!
Even with my clear bias toward sticking lovely labels on everything I own, I far prefer well-worn labels on well-used containers over perfect labels on perfectly unused containers. While the latter may LOOK lovely, the former is more likely to FEEL lovely.
Warm and inviting, cozy, homey places are often a little worn. Well-used, well-cared-for, and well-loved, even if a little worn.
Sleek, polished, and perfect is rarely warm and cozy. So no apologies for those well-worn labels! Create new labels if you’re having a hard time reading them, they keep falling off, or you have some time and feel like re-labeling things. But no apologies in the mean time. Remember, you want to be organized, not perfect!
Re-labeling things in our kitchen has been on my to-do list a while. But other things, such as creating this website, creating and writing down recipes, and enjoying the beautiful area where we live, have taken precedence over shiny new labels. But maybe that will be a nice summer project…
